Commodore computers

Commodore made some rather excellent 8-bit computers, of which Rubenerd is rather enamoured. This page is for progress building, tinkering, upgrading, repairing, and maybe even playing on his fleet of vintage second-hand Commodore hardware.

Commodore VC-20 CR (1983)

PAL, cost-reduced (CR) version. Bought off eBay in 2023 from the UK. Was fully functional, save for a broken keyboard which I sourced a replacement for.

Have yet to decide what to name it.

Status

  • Fully functional

Upgrades

  • Retr0brighted white case
  • Original keyboard was broken, replaced with a beige double-shot Aldi C64 keyboard with the same font. Love how it looks!

Commodore 16 (1984)

NTSC version. Bought off eBay for my 18th birthday from a chap in the US. Has come in super handy for troubleshooting my Plus/4, with which it shares a bunch of ICs.

Named Jan for everyone's favourite German Commodore expert Jan Beta. Among other help, his Commodore 16 repairathon was what got me to fix my Plus/4.

Status

  • Mostly functional, but doesn't turn on for the first few minutes
  • Reset switch doesn't work at all
  • RAM and other chips fully functional according to DIAG264

Upgrades

  • Added SaRuMan64 socket under TED, to increase memory from 16 to 64 KiB.

Wishlist

  • Dust cover
  • SD2IEC with appropriate alternative power connector
  • Replacement crystal and rework to convert to PAL machine

Commodore Plus/4 (1984)

NTSC version. Bought off eBay for my 18th birthday from a chap in the US. Probably my favourite 8-bit computer design of all time.

Named David or my high school computer teacher Mr Dunham, who regaled me with stories of his 8-bit computer adventures over our 10-pin bowling practice.

Status

  • Fully functional

Upgrades

  • Replaced dead PLA with PLAnkton, after confirming issue by swapping PLA from C16
  • Replaced Commodore resin power brick with C64 adaptor, to also use that new power supply

Wishlist

  • SD2IEC with appropriate alternative power connector
  • Replacement crystal and rework to convert to PAL machine

Commodore 128 (1985)

PAL version. Easily the most versatile and capable 8-bit machine of all time!

Named Screenbeard, who gave it to me after listing to a podcast episode where I wished for one! He's good civ.

Commodore 64C (1988)

PAL version. Bought off eBay in 2022. I know it's not as retro as a breadbin, but I've always loved the wedge-shaped design of the 64C.

Named Adrian for Adrian Black of Adrian's Digital Basement, who's enthusiasm and technical knowledge were instrumental in my fixing of several 8-bit machines.
